Each disc can only be played on a DVD player purchased from the same region. For example: A DVD disc purchased from Australia will not work in the United States unless played on a DVD player purchased in Australia. So make sure any DVD you purchase is from the approriate region. If a DVD title is available that you wish to purchase, the product information will tell you what regions it suits.
